Originally, the film "The Importance of Being "Mahu‚" started out as a short film project on present day Mahu [transgendered people of Hawai'i] and Drag Queens in Honolulu". However, as we began to gather personal narratives and research we encountered a vast history that we couldn't pass up. Hawaii sporadically produces films critical of colonization but never has a film been produced about the acceptance of Mahu."

In "Maui Log: Day 9" Grace Villarin Duenas talks about discovering Hawaii's shared history and struggle with the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and other colonized cultures... "With each breathtaking turn comes a painful heartbreaking reminder that this land is constantly violated by the greed of foreign interests. When we first arrived here, a local reggae-rap song asked about "Where did all the Hawaiians go?" I find myself asking the same question."
