A&PI Wellness Center's Helping and Outreaching to Peers
Everywhere (HOPE) Program Closes June 30, 2004
Due to ongoing funding challenges, Asian & Pacific Islander
Wellness Center (A&PI Wellness Center) has arrived at
the difficult decision to close one of its two youth services
programs, Helping and Outreaching to Peers Everywhere (HOPE),
by June 30, 2004. A&PI Wellness Center has developed plans
for transitioning core services of the HOPE Program to Community
Youth Center (CYC), a 34-year old youth service community
based organization committed to serving Asian & Pacific
Islander youth in San Francisco.
Since its inception in 1993, the HOPE Program has served A&PI
youth, aged 12 to 18, in high-risk situations: runaways, homeless
or marginally housed youth, and youth at risk for becoming
or already involved in San Francisco's juvenile justice system.
Presently, the HOPE Program maintains a unique presence at
Youth Guidance Center (which houses San Francisco's juvenile
detention hall) by conducting weekly support groups for A&PI
youth in detention. From our Tenderloin location, the HOPE
Program has also offered case management, counseling, referrals,
HIV and sexual health education, psycho-educational groups,
leadership development, and life skills retreats to A&PI
youth.
HOPE youth, peer leaders and clients have been informed of
the program's closing, and the agency has gathered feedback
from youth regarding this decision.
The Board of Directors and staff of A&PI Wellness Center
remain committed to serving A&PI youth across our agency's
programs and in collaboration with other service providers.
We will retain our AQU25A (Asian
and Pacific Islander Queer and Questioning, 25 and Under All
Together) program.
