The Third Annual Family Style III Training Convened in Philadelphia

On 14th – 17th November 2006, twenty-seven participants from twenty-one organizations across the U.S. and Pacific Island Jurisdictions, (Guam, Federated States of Micronesia and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands), gathered in Philadelphia for our third annual Family Style Training. Entitled, “Getting a Grip on Program Evaluation”, the goal of the training was to equip participants with the skills to conduct basic program evaluations at their agencies as well as more advanced knowledge to enable them to work with consultants to manage complex evaluations. During this intensive national training, conducted by Chong Kee Tan, Lina Sheth, Bhupendra Sheoran and Teddy Consolacion from our Community Development & External Affairs program and Ramani Sripada, from MAP for Health in Boston, Massachusetts, participants had the opportunity to design and conduct focus groups, create survey instruments, and delve into statistics and learn how to calculate sample size, confidence level and confidence interval. They also learned about experimental design and how to conduct program evaluation at minimal cost. Although the curriculum was very packed and at times quite challenging, participants rose to the challenge and made it into a most memorable training.Weeks after the training, our program organizers are still getting emails from enthusiastic participants thanking them for the stimulating time and telling of how these new skills and knowledge have already started to be used in their respective work.
