Family Style IV: Leadership and Creativity in CBO for HIV Prevention

November 11th – 14th, 2007
Palm Spring
Workshop hotel to be announced later

Asian & Pacific Islander Wellness Center (A&PI Wellness Center) is hosting “Family Style IV: Leadership and Creativity in CBOs for HIV Prevention” from November 11th – 14th 2007 in Palm Spring.

Goal:

To increase leadership and creativity among management, program supervisors, and front-line staff in Asian & Pacific Islander (A&PI) community-based organizations across the nation and the Pacific region, so that participants can better address issues of staff morale, turnover, and creative program development in their organizations.

Training Description:

This training uses experiential learning technique and small group activities to generate insights and to help participants integrate such insights into their daily work. While it will also teach standard program development skills, the emphasis will not be on following standard procedures but on how to use these skills in the context of leadership and creativity to create innovative programs.
The program starts on November 11th evening with ice-breaker, training objectives overview and welcome dinner. Actual training begins on 12th Monday 9:30am and runs through till 14th early afternoon. Participants may choose to arrive on the 12th morning, but must be on time for the start of the training on 9:30am.

Target Audience:

HIV prevention management, program supervisors, and front-line staff across the United States and the Pacific Island Jurisdictions working with A&PIs who are interested in learning and sharing their knowledge on how their agencies foster leadership and creativity across all job descriptions. Priority will be given to anyone who is facing staff morale, turnover and program development issues in their agency.
Additionally, the following target audiences have been prioritized and include:

1. Managers/Supervisors or front-line staff from organizations who receive CDC funds to conduct HIV prevention programs specifically for A&PI communities through their health department or a subcontract through another CDC-funded community-based organization, including A&PI people living with HIV/AIDS

2. Mangers/Supervisors or front-line staff from non-CDC funded organizations who are conducting HIV prevention interventions in A&PI communities, including A&PI people living with HIV/AIDS

3. Managers/Supervisors or front-line staff from other organizations working on HIV-related issues (such as sexually transmitted diseases, domestic violence, family planning, teen pregnancy) in A&PI communities who have an interest in doing HIV prevention work, including A&PI people living with HIV/AIDS
Space is limited due to funding constraints.

Training Cost:

There is no registration fee for this meeting and scholarships are available for selected participants. Ability to pay will not be a factor in the participant selection process. A&PI Wellness Center will arrange and pay for lodging for the duration of the training. However, please note that A&PI Wellness Center requires selected participants to commit to attending the entire training.

For participants who are attending USCA in the week immediately prior to this training, please consider staying on in Palm Spring so that we do not need to fly you in again. Participants who are staying on from USCA can request an additional night of accommodation at the Family Style Training hotel. For participants who are not attending USCA, please remember to indicate your flight needs and we will pay for your travels subject to available funds.

Please only request for flights if you are not attending USCA. Please also send in your application early so that we can secure your flights at lower cost.
