Indonesian Cross-Gender Artist Didik
Nini Thowok to Perform in San Francisco on April 10
(San Francisco, March 19 2003)
Didik Nini Thowok, an Indonesian cross-gender artist, will
perform in San Francisco on Thursday, April 10 at Club T at
the N’touch, 1548 Polk Street. The cost to attend is
$3. Doors open at 9 p.m. Asian and Pacific Islander Wellness
Center will receive partial proceeds from this performance.
Didik Nini Thowok is a highly recognized and frequently requested
artist in Indonesia, whose performances include dancing, choreography,
drama, comedy, and mime. Didik’s unique style combines
classical, folk, modern and comedic dance forms. He is one
of the few artists who continue the long tradition of “traditional
cross gender” dance form. His talents cover impersonating
female characters as well as incredible skill in various dance
traditions such as the Topeng (mask dance), Sundanese, Cirebon,
Balinese, and Central Javanese.
Local community icon Tita Aida will emcee Didik Nini Thowok’s
performance, and conduct an OraSure demonstration. The OraSure
method uses a swab to collect oral fluid from the mouth in
only three minutes, without using needles. The oral fluid
is tested to see if it contains HIV antibodies. Asian and
Wellness Center’s Rice Girls also will be performing
at the April 10 event.
